Visit Salt Island and explore the famous RMS Rhone wreck, salt ponds and scenic trails — a must-see stop on a British Virgin Islands yacht charter.

Diacover Salt Island

Salt Island is a small, uninhabited island offering a unique combination of history, nature and underwater exploration. It is best known as the resting place of the RMS Rhone, one of the most famous shipwrecks in the Caribbean and a highlight for many guests on a British Virgin Islands yacht charter.

The RMS Rhone, a Royal Mail Steamship that sank in 1867, lies in two main sections. The bow sits at around 30 feet and can be explored by confident snorkellers, while the deeper stern section is a world-class dive site. Covered in coral and surrounded by marine life, the wreck is considered one of the top underwater attractions in the BVI.

Above water, Salt Island features a traditional salt pond that has been harvested for centuries, with part of the salt historically sent to the British Crown. A short hike across the island leads to elevated viewpoints offering stunning panoramic views over the Sir Francis Drake Channel.

Salt Island is typically visited as a day stop, often from nearby Cooper Island, making it easy to combine history, snorkelling and scenic exploration in a single outing. For guests interested in maritime history and quieter destinations, Salt Island adds depth and variety to any BVI sailing itinerary.
